MODELLING THE CARBON SINK IN ITALIAN FOREST ECOSYSTEMS USING ANCILLARY DATA, REMOTE SENSING DATA AND PRODUCTIVITY MODELS
Funded in 2008 by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (grant RBFR08LM04) the project is coordinated by Prof. G. Chirici at the University of Molise. The consortium was created trough two Italian Universities and the National Research Council:
- Università degli Studi del Molise, ECOGEOFOR (G. Chirici, F. Lombardi, R. Tognetti)
- Università degli Studi della Tuscia, SISFOR (R. Salvati, P. Corona, A. Barbati)
- Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, IBIMET (M. Pasqui, F. Maselli, M. Chiesi)
The project started operativelly the 1st December 2010 and will end the 30th November 2013.
Aim and background of the project
The project is aimed at producing spatially extended estimations (mapping) of Gross and Net Primary Productivity of forest ecosystems in Italy for the period 1999 - 2008. The project will tentativelly works also for the estimation of the Net Exosistem Exchange. The geographic resolution of the estimates is 1 km.
The estimation is obtained coupling two models: C-FIX (Veroustrate et al., 2002) and BIOME-BGC.
The first tentative experiments of this methodology started already in 1998. The final methodological approach we apply is therefor a refinement of the methods we tested in the past. Different sources of information from remote sensing (SPOT Vegetation), Corine Land Cover, soil maps and metro daily data are coupled after a first parametrization/calibration phase. The results are validated against flux towers and aggregated National Forest Inventory growing stock increments estimates.
